Phishers in Federal Reserve double bluff

Friday, November 14, 2008

Reports are emerging of a new phishing scam which appears to originate from the Federal Reserve and purports to contain information on how to protect systems about a new spam email threat.

According to the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-Cert), messages are circulating which invite users to click on links to get information about an emergent phishing scam.

However, doing so will redirect users to a maliciously crafter web page, opening systems up to data security breaches.

US-Cert urges users not to follow any unsolicited links contained within emails, in addition to exercising caution when visiting any unknown or untrusted sites.

So too, antivirus products should be installed and kept up to date, the group announced.

Meanwhile, users of Trend Micro's AVG 8 program recently ran into trouble when downloading a definition update for the software.

A coding error contained within the update resulted in the deletion of key dynamic link libraries, sending systems into spiralling reboot loops.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18876982-ADNFCR
